Reading

In year six, the children have three reciprocal reading sessions per week, each of which last around forty minutes.  A new text will be introduced each week, which links to an aspect of the curriculum.  During the first session, children will practise their fluency and vocabulary.  In session two, children will answer retrieval questions and in the third and final session, they will focus on one particular question type.  The question types will be to do with inference, prediction, explaining or summarising.

In addition, some children may also have interventions (Dockside, Inference training or small group sessions).

Children are expected to read every day and be able to talk about what they have read.  They should be reading 90 words per minute on a range of age-related texts.  Children can borrow books from the school library and will be assigned books on Bug Club.
