Design and Technology
Vision
Our vision at Netherthorpe Primary School, we have designed our Design and Technology (D&T) curriculum with the aim that our children will gain a practical understanding of the world around them, and become resiliant, independent and creative thinkers, who will have the confidence to use, and build on their learning outside the classroom. We believe that Designand and technology should give children the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making functional products. We feel it is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the designed and made world in which we all live and work.
Curriculum Aims:
- Create a fun, enjoyable and engaging curriculum, providing memorable learning experiences.
- Facilitate creative learning that provides the opportunity for the development of higher order skills.
- Allow children to develop functional and appealing products, that are aimed at particular individuals or groups and are fit for purpose.
- Promote analytical thinking, identifying the features, problems and solutions of products.
- Will challenge children to research information, think for themselves, give reasoned answers, work independently, be enterprising, develop resilience and good attitudes to learning.
- Build on prior learning and promote progression of skills.
- Allow children to consider the views of others, evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria.
- Provide opportunities for all children to collaborate and understand each other's perspectives.
- Create an enjoyable, engaging and challenging outlet for children who may find traditional subjects more challenging.
- Give children an insight into how everyday products can be created.
- Introduce children to the types of careers that incorporate D&T and inspire them to realise their potential.
Intent:
We have scrutinised and considered a range of factors to ensure that our curriculum is ambitious and designed to give all our learners the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. We have ensured that teaching and learning is coherently planned and sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning.
In EYFS children will enhance the 'Expressive Arts and Design' skills and their confidence and enjoyment, through 'making' activities, woven into their daily learning experiences.
In KS1 and KS2 the children receive a design and technology curriculum which allows them to exercise their creativity through designing and making. The children are taught to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to design and make a product using textiles, mecanisms, structures and electrical systems. Skills are taught progressively to ensure that all children are able to learn and practice in order to develop as they move through the school. Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows children to adapt and improve their product, this is a key skill which they need throughout their life. D&T allows children to apply the knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, particularly Maths, Science and Art. Children’s interests are captured through theme learning, ensuring that links are made in a cross curricular way, giving children motivation and meaning for their learning. Children will learn basic cooking skills.
By the end of Key Stage one and two, our children are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programmes of study.
