Netherthorpe school governing body

The governing body is made up of volunteers who have a responsibility to ensure that the school provides the best teaching and learning possible. The day-to-day management of the school is undertaken by the headteacher, but the governing body can support the leadership of the school and offer guidance.

Governors come from various parts of the community and are appointed by the governing body. Our governing body is made up of the headteacher, staff, parents, members of the local community/business, and a local education authority governor.

Our governing body purpose statement

The gverning body of Netherthorpe Primary School will work together with the leadership team to ensure that the strategic plans of the school produce the best teaching and learning possible. We will strive to be both supportive and challenging in our relationship with the school and will be ambassadors for the school.

Our governing body structure

The full governing body meets every term. We always receive a report from the headteacher and discuss key issues, curriculum and standards. We have two committees, which also meet every term. Our Finance and Premises committee ensures that the resources we have are used in the most effective way. Our Curriculum and Standards committee monitors how well our children are learning and what they are being taught.

Our work

As well as the governing body meetings and committee meetings, we visit school to see and hear about the things we are told in our meetings. We also meet with staff to look at particular areas like ‘safeguarding’ and ‘special educational needs’, so that we can see how these aspects of school life are managed.

A small group of governors is also involved in the performance management of the headteacher, which further adds to our understanding of how the school is being managed.

Each year, we join in with the staff INSET program to review and revise the school development plan. This is an important part of our work as we ensure that the school’s future plans develop well.
