Year 5

Welcome back and welcome to Year 5! We are very excited about the new school term and we are all looking forward to getting to know you. This term we will be out and about in our local area, getting lost of fresh air, exercise and connecting with our environment.

In literacy we will be spending the first few weeks studying Poetry. Year five will be creating poems about themselves and also learning and studying poems that link to nature and the things we see outside. After that, the children will be taking part in a writing project in which all of Key Stage two will be involved in. Something exciting to look forward to!

In maths we will be starting with place value, re-capping what we already know and extending this with numbers that have up to 6 digits. Addition and subtraction comes next, looking at different methods for both operations. There is a unit in statistics followed by multiplication and division and finally perimeter and area – which takes us up to Christmas.

Our science topic this term is ‘Living things and their habitats’. We will be looking at the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, birds and insects and comparing these by looking at similarities and differences. Flowering plants will also be studied to look at how pollination takes place and how their life cycle differs from animals.

In art we will be linking our work with English. Our first project will be a piece of collage that mixes different textures, colours and materials. This will be in the style of a portrait and run alongside poetry the children have written about themselves. We will then move onto drawing and where ever possible this will be done outdoors and again, linked to our local environment.

PE will be on Monday and Wednesday. We are currently waiting to hear about swimming sessions, as year 5 will be the first class to go this term. On Monday’s the children are taking part in professionally coached football lessons which build on their skills from the previous year.

Please make sure your child has an appropriate PE kit and the correct footwear. NO BLACK SOLED TRAINERS PLEASE apart from plimsoll style PE shoes.

Our PSHE will centre on wellbeing and mindfulness. The children will be doing lots of talking, sharing and listening – all very important when exploring feelings and thoughts.
