Welcome to Year 5

A warm welcome back to school after the Winter Holidays! As always, we have lots to learn over the coming term. For more details on the Year 5 curriculum for 2017-18, you can download the documents posted at the bottom of this page.

Useful Information

This year, Mr McGill is teaching Monday-Thursday, with Ms Astbury teaching on Friday.

PE -  In the summer term, Year Five will be taking part in a Cricket Tournament with other schools in Sheffield. To prepare for this The second part of the Spring Term will be focusing on cricket, with PE being taught on Tuesdays and Fridays. Dave Lennox, a professional cricket coach, will be teaching the coach on Friday mornings until the end of the Spring Term. Weather permitting, these sessions will take place on the Ponderosa so children should have suitable footwear (trainers rather than plimsoles on these days. The Tuesday PE lesson will be in the sports hall.

Homework - Homework is handed out on Friday and expected in on Thursday, and will normally include times tables and spelling, as well as other projects at different times. However, the most important task to do at home is reading! You need to be reading every night - it improves your learning, increases your vocabulary and it's fun! Please help us monitor how much your child is reading by ensuring their reading diaries are kept up to date.

Spelling homework Children will be given a personal list of spellings to practise, taken from spelling rules we have been learning in class or spelling errors made during the week. Children will then use the "Spell Well" leaflet to choose how they want to practise. If you misplace the leaflet, can download a copy from the link at the bottom of this page.

Our Geography topic this term will be answering the question, "Why are our coasts important to us?" This topic will continue into the fist half of the Summer Term during which there will be a trip to the seaside! More details about this will follow. The topic will focus on the different physical processes that form the features that you may find on the British coastline, as well as how people use the coast in different ways, before looking at what people do to protect the coast.

In Science, we will be learning the nature of different materials. We will investigate the different properties of materials and how this effects the way the are used. They will also learn how different processes such as heating or burning can change those properties.

In Literacy, We are carrying out a book study into the novel "The Invention of Hugo Cabret". We will be reading the text as a class and carrying out different activities to help our understanding of how authors develop characters, settings and storylines. We will be also using events from the book as the basis for our writing our own fictional diaries.

In Maths, our focus this term is on Fractions. We will be learning about different types of fractions, learn how to add and subract fractions and solve problems involving fractions of ammounts. On Friday, Ms Astbury will be teaching children Statistics.
