Welcome to Year 5

A warm welcome back to school after the festive holidays! As always, we have lots to learn over the coming term. For more details on the Year 5 curriculum for 2016-17, you can download the documents posted at the bottom of this page.

Useful Information

PE - PE is every Monday at 11:00 and Friday after lunch, so please make sure you have a PE kit in school on these days. You will also need a kit for "Marathon Club" on Friday morning, including trainers suitable for running on the Ponderosa.

Homework - Homework is handed out on Friday and expected in on Thursday. However, the most task to do at home is reading! You need to be reading every night - it improves your learning, increases your vocabulary and it's fun!

Spelling homework has changed - each week, children will be given a personal list of spellings to practise, taken from spelling rules we have been learning in class or spelling errors made during the week. Children will then use the "Spell Well" leaflet to choose how they want to practise. If you misplace the leaflet, can download a copy from the link at the bottom of this page.

Our Geography topic this term is "Mountains". We will be learning about how mountains are formed and where in the world you can find them, as well as looking at how and why people use them. This will culminate in our own expedition up a mountain in the nearby Peak District. More details about this exciting trip will follow soon. We will also be building models of mountains based on our trip and using these in an exhibition to showcase our learning!

In Science, our topic is "Earth and Space". We will learn about different objects in the Solar System, including our own planet Earth! Check out the photos of us building a scale model of the Solar System in the Ponderosa!

In Literacy, we are studying the book, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznik. We are learning about the characters, making lots of exciting links between the book and the film, as well as using the "automaton" as an inspiration for our Design and Technology project. The book study will also involve learning how to write diary entries, imagining we are one of the chracters from the book.

In Maths, our focus this term is on fractions, followed by decimals and percentages. At the end of the spring term there will be a mini-topic where we will learn the maths of measurement. For more details on the Maths Curriculum this term, click and download the "Year 5 Maths Spring Overview" at the bottom of this page.
