In Foundation Stage 1 the children are encouraged to become independent learners and critical thinkers, therefore our curriculum is child-led. This means we will explore and develop children’s own thoughts and interests. Lastly, we will observe the characteristics of the children’s learning, for instance whether a child shows curiosity about objects, events and people.

The ways in which the children in Foundation Stage 1 engage with other people, including their peers and the learning environment underpin the learning and development across all areas of learning and support the children to remain an effective and motivated learner. We hope to encourage the children in the setting to play and explore, be an active learner and create and think critically, through the seven areas of learning which include:

  1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  2. Physical Development
  3. Communication and Language
  4. Literacy
  5. Mathematics
  6. Understanding the World
  7. Expressive Arts and Design

In Foundation Stage 1 we focus on the Prime areas of learning which are Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Communication and Language.

This term we are learning all about Spring and Summer, and what happens around us as the seasons change. We have also been learning the story of going on a bear hunt. Please watch the video below of the author, Michen Rosen, telling the story.

We're going on a bear hunt

The children should even be able to join in!

We have also been reading the story "We all go travelling by" and learning the vocabularly "car, bike, plane, bus, shoes, train, truck, boat, riding, sailing, flying, walking, driving, fast, slow". Below is a video of the story. Does your child remember the new vocabulary we have been learning?

After half term we will be reading "the Hungry Caterpillar" and we will be looking after real life caterpillars in class and watching how they turn into butterflies. Here is a video of the story if you want to watch with your child.
