Our Curriculum

At Netherthorpe Primary school we provide a broad and balanced curriculum where we offer children the opportunitiy to revisit skills several times over the time they are in school. This enables children to learn deeply and apply previous learning in a range of contexts and subjects.

We enable children to experience both depth of learning and breadth of subject matter. We develop depth by having a progression of key skills for each subject in the curriculum that enables children to build on previous learning and reflect on the skills they already developed. We have based our progression of skills on work by Chris Quigley for all subjects, apart from Computing, Online Safety and PHSE, which are based on work created by teachers and experts working with Learn Sheffield.

We encourage children to think about prior topics and learning they have experienced to make links to new learning. We encourage breadth of content by having two year role programmes for a number of subjects. One aim of this is for children to apply the skills and understanding they are developing to a range of different contexts; another is to encourage families to work together on projects across age phases and key stages, when possible.

We send Knowledge Organisers home each half term for children and parents in KS1 and 2 to use at home to discuss learning and help embed key facts, concepts and vocabulary linked to that particular subject. these Knowledge Organisers are also available for use in school to support children as they learn about a particular area of Science or as aspect of History or Geography. If at all possible, please help your child to discuss the content of Knoweldge Organisers at home - the more they are able to discuss content confidently, the more deeply they will be able to think and learn.

Over the last year we have updated our Long Term Plans and Progression of Skills for most subjects (we still have PE as an area for focus this year). They are attached for information. As with any 'plans', that is exactly what these documents are and so the work taking place in class may be slightly different to the content of curriculum plans, depending on interesting and relevant events happening in the local area and wider world. After each topic, teachers review how well children have learned facts, developed knowledge and applied skills and plan futre learning accordingly.

We encourage children to carry out extra work at home and our children are really good at showing us how they can apply and extend their understanding by creating artefacts and PowerPoint presentations, for example, that they have completed as part of homework and/or extra work. We encourage parents to take an active interest in homework and to help and encourage children in their endeavours.

At the end of this academic year we will continue to review the content of topics and the order that topics have been tought over the year and make tweaks as necessary to improve them in future years.
