Welcome back to the Spring Term

Dear Parents and Carers

I hope that you had a fantastic Christmas, if you celebrate it, and I wish you all a happy and healthy 2017.

I was a little bit poorly at the end of last term and so did not get to thank you formally for your support at the Winter Cafe. As a result of your generosity, we raised over £600 which we will use to buy additional playground equipment for the children, as well as provide additional trips and visits. Our next visit to school provided by school funds is from a theatre company who will be performing The Snow Queen. This links to some learning in Y2 but will be watched by all children in school on 20 January.

Before going on to talk about this term, I would also like to mention how proud I was of the children in Nursery, F2, Year 1 and Year 2 for their fantastic end of term production. I know that you were also very impressed by the confidence and enthusiasm with which the children spoke, acted and sang - they were brilliant! I would like to thank all staff involved for making the performances so good with so little time spent practising.

I spoke to the children about New Years Resolutions in assembly today. One of mine is to update information to you more regularly on this website! For now we will continue to send out newsletters but I hope that we may reach a stage in the relatively near future when the website will be a really strong means of communication about news, trips and general information. My aim is also to update you about things in school by means of a blog, so please keep an eye on that.

To start off this resolution, I would like to inform you about meetings with teachers over the next few weeks. We always send out curriculum overviews to you but last term the parent meetings we held at the beginning of term were so well received and useful that we are going to hold them again this term. Meetings will be at 9.00am, unless otherwise stated, and will last for about twenty minutes. In them, teachers will tell you about the main aspects of the curriculum children are going to be learning about and also update you on how you can support children in developing spelling skills at home. The dates for these meetings are:

Year 3     Monday 9 January

Year 4     Tuesday 10 January

F2            Friday 13 January

Year 1     Monday 16 January

Year 2     Tuesday 17 January

Nursery   Wednesday 18 January (9.00am and 12.30pm)

Year 5     Monday 23 January

Year 6     Tuesday 24 January

Each of the meetings will take place in the classroom of the children in that year group. Please come along to find out how we can continue to work together this term to support our children's learning.

We will also be having another meeting about how children learn to read and how you can help make sure that your children become confident, enthusiastic and skilled readers. This will be the thrid of six meetings that will take place over the coming weeks. The meetings will be in Key Stage One's Continuous area and, once again,  will take place at the start of the day. The next meeting is on Thursday 12 January - please come along to find out more.

Finally, I would like to let you know about additions to our Netherthorpe staff. Mrs Ania Jordan has joined us in Year 3 and is really looking forward to meeting parents and carers, so please come in and introduce yourselves to her. Ms Laura Parrott has also joined us as a teaching assistant in Year 2 and Ms Laura Donaldson is joining us in Year 6 as a teaching assistant after Mr Webb returns from paternity leave. During his absence Mrs Tanguy and Mrs Pacsuta-Davies will be teaching Year 6. Speaking of paternity leave, there are two other new members to our Netherthorpe family: Mrs Bradley has had a beautiful baby boy and Mr Webb is the extremely proud father of a beautiful baby girl. I am sure that you will join with me in wishing them both all the very best with their new families.

As always, thank you for your continued support,

Elizabeth Gray (Headteacher)
